What role do stand-alone storage systems play in the electricity market?
Stand-alone battery storage systems (BESS) are independent energy storage systems that are operated independently of generation plants. They stabilize the power grid, balance load peaks and enable participation in control energy and flexibility markets. This makes them a central component for security of supply and grid stability in the energy market.
From what size is a stand-alone BESS economically viable?
The economic viability depends on location, electricity price volatility and market access. As a rule, systems from around 5 MWh upwards are economically viable, as they exploit economies of scale in construction, operation and marketing. As price differences in intraday trading increase, profitability improves further.
Which control power services can be mapped with storage systems?
Modern BESS can provide primary control power (FCR), secondary control power (aFRR) and, in some cases, minute reserve (mFRR). Due to the fast response time and precise control, they are ideally suited for frequency control, redispatch and system stabilization.
How is the grid connection and integration into existing infrastructure carried out?
The connection usually takes place at the medium or high voltage level via a separate substation. The storage systems can be integrated into existing grid control and SCADA systems via standardized interfaces. AXSOL relies on modular container solutions with certified grid protection systems.
